Shahbagh police station surrounded to arrest Samya murder suspects, 48-hour ultimatum

DeskReport

Dhaka University students and Chhatra Dal leader Shahriar Alam have given a 48-hour ultimatum to arrest the ‘real’ accused in the murder of their colleague. They gave the ultimatum while staging a sit-in at Shahbagh police station on Friday afternoon.

Around 11 am today, students gathered in front of Raju Statue under the banner of ‘Bangladesh General Student Society’ demanding justice for the murder of Samya. From there, they took a procession and took a position in front of Shahbagh Police Station at around 12:15 pm. After staying there for about an hour and a half, they said that if the real accused are not arrested within 48 hours, the next program will be announced on Sunday.

They kept chanting slogans like ‘My brother is in the grave, why is the murderer outside’, ‘Why is the murderer outside, what is the administration doing’, ‘Why did my brother die, Shahbagh Police Station wants an answer’.

Shahriar’s classmate and postgraduate student of the Institute of Education and Research Mashiur Rahman Shuvo said, ‘If the real culprits are not arrested within 48 hours, we will go for strict action.

Another classmate, Toufiq-ul Islam, said, “Those who were arrested by the police are not the main accused, even if they are involved. The administration will have to answer why the remaining accused are not being arrested. If this non-violent movement is ignored, it may take another form.”

A delegation of protesters from the sit-in program went to Shahbagh police station for discussions. The group included DU teachers Md. Abdus Salam, Asim Das, Md. Sirajul Islam and students. After the discussion, the students returned to the campus from in front of the police station.
